Alfred Withers





Alfred Withers was born in Bristol in 1848 and baptised at St Augustine the less on 18 February 1848.

In the 1851 census Alfred was 3 years old and living with his parents Samuel Hicks and Jane Clavel Withers in Park Street, Bristol.

By 1871 Alfred (aged 23) had qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon and was living in Lineola Villas, Willesden Lane, Willesden, North London.

In 1877 Alfred Withers Married Frederica Caroline North Rothwell In Ontario, Canada

In the 1881 Census Alfred (aged 33) is living in Marylebone at 16 Quebec Street and listed as  Job Master Veterinary Surgeon working in the Withers firm of Jobmasters.
He is living with his Canadian wife Frederica (aged 28), his twins sons Alfred Ross and Gordon Stennett (aged 2), and herbert W (aged 8 months)

In the 1891 Census Alfred, now 43, is living in a large house called Kingsgate on Shoot up Hill. This is now part of the A5 road generally known as the Edgeware Road/Maida Vale.
Living at Kingsgate with Alfred were his wife Frederica (37), Alfred Ross and Gordon Stennett (twins aged 12), Herbert W (aged 11), Clavel H (son aged 6), Julia F (aged 4) and St Claire F (daughter aged 3) A niece called Frances M Rothwell (aged 19) was also staying with them at this time. Also at this property is a stable, housing a coachman and a groom and a cottage housing the gardener and his family.

In 1892 there is a record of Frederica's visit, presumably to see her family, to the USA. The ships manifest for SS Germanic on its return voyage from New York to Liverpool shows Frederica took her son Clavel and Daughter Julia and a resident governess Maude Wilkins with her.

The 1901 Census shows Alfred aged 52 living at 11 Abbey Road Marylebone and listed as Veterinary Surgeon and Jobmaster. Living with him are his wife Frederica aged 50, his son Gordon aged 22 and listed as a Jobmaster and Herbert aged 21 listed as a musician. Maud Wilkins is still living with them but now listed as a musician.

In 1912 Alfred died aged 64 in Marylebone. Alfred was listed as a Jobmaster at the time of his death and was one of the last generation to be occupied with Horse drawn transport. By the time his son Clavel was in employment the family switch had been made to motor mechanics.

In 1934 Frederica died aged 81 in Hampstead

 

DESCENDENTS OF ALFRED WITHERS
 

Alfred Ross and Gordon Stennet (twins) were born August 1878.
Alfred Ross Withers married Ida Morris in 1906 in Hanover Square, Middlesex, London.

Gordon Stenett Withers married Edith Juliet Digges La Touche on 1 Jan 1911 at Holy Trinity, Finchley Road Camden, London. Gordon died on 29 Nov 1922.

Herbert Warwick Stenett Withers was born 11 March 1880. On 7 Feb 1906 he married Stephanie Marguerite Hildred Christine Elzey in Westminster. On 29 October 1913 they had a son Rupert Alfred Withers. In 1957 Rupert was granted a temporary immigration permit to Brazil.
Rupert Married Kathleen and had  seven children.

Rupert died on 11 Dec 1995.

Clavel H was born Charles Alison Clavel Hicks Withers in 1884 and in June 1911 in the district of Hampstead he married Agnes Williams. In 1912 they had a son Clavel Rodney Withers.

In 1930 The Electoral register for South West St Pancras, Mornington polling district shows Clavell Alison and Dorothea Withers living at 89 Albert Street.

In 1931 The Electoral register for Willeden, Cricklewood Ward shows Clavell Alison and Dorothea H Withers living at 16 Paddock Road.

In the 1934 Electoral Register for Hendon, Park Ward Clavel Alison, Clavel Rodney (22) and Dorothea H Withers are residing at 17 Sevington Road.

Charles Alison Clavel Hicks Withers died in 1950 in Marylebone.
